Review of 2009

By Joseph. Posted in Misc. | No Comments »

Hello guys, a year has passed in just a blink of an eye! Don’t you agree?

Haha, yea, and now, I think it’s just suitable if we did some reflections. As for this post, yep, I’m gonna write down some of the major events which have happened. Of course, there will be some bad memories, but of course, there will also be good ones.

Let’s start with the months leading to SYF’09. It was a uphill struggle, we persevered, endured, and we made it. In the end, we created history. Gold w/ Honours. :D After that, we had a little break. Then later on, the long (boring) monotonous band practices practising for HCImpressione took over. Again, we persevered (at least most of us did), and ta da! A successful concert!

Yep, I have covered the 2 most major events in 2009 (excluding “A Musical Tapestry”) in that short paragraph. Of course, I have skipped the bulk of the process, the joys and tribulations that have occurred while working towards the 2 different goals… but remember, these are the things that we will take with us as we continue with our lives. It’s like how I can remember the process of preparing for outdoors SYF last year, and not really the competition itself. The same thing applies here. Many of us may have felt, “sian”, tired, worn out, perhaps till the point that we just feel like breaking down. Of course, there will also be times when you had fun. For example, band camp, or the immense happiness after we heard the announcer saying “Hwa Chong Institution High School Band. GOLD WITH HONOURS!” These will be the times that we will remember, the joy and the suffering that we, as one band, HCIBand, gone through together. These events, practices, make you better in different aspects – playing, discipline, etc. These will also be the events that have bonded you guys together. Look back and consider. What if these events never happened? Will you guys still be as bonded? Guys, even punishments, even those times when we had outdoors, standing under the hot sun, the times when we worked our guts out in SALT main hall. You might not know it, but all these things are bringing you guys closer together, as one band, HCIBand. What I am trying to say, is that HCIBand is your second kin, the people in it, will forever be there to support you. Don’t let any petty issues, grudges, whatsoever, separate us. Be more understanding towards each other, be more friendly to each other. Even the conductors, and the current sec 4s who are soon to be J1s, are part of this family. Look to each other for help, treat them as your 2nd family. Be proud to be part of this family, be proud that you belong to HCIBand, be proud of what you have achieved. You will be with them for the next X(insert number) years. The next few years, whatever that may happen, you will be facing them as one HCIBand. Always remember that you are not alone. Since I have mentioned this point, each of you should also treat each other like family, if not, like friends. You are not just acquaintances. Always remember, you are a HCIBandit.

Moving on, next year’s gonna be a tough year, and you will need to rely on each other even more. Hawaii is not going to be easy. In fact, it’s going to be harder. It’s 1 out of 10 chances to get that top place. Can we do it? I’m sure we can if we are united as one. Next year, also look forward to outdoors, and other performances. I know some may feel sian because of the immense amount of events/things to do next year, but remember, you always have your peers to support you. Never stop trusting in each other, and always remember, we are one big family – HCIBand.

Be proud of it.

Foreign Exchange

By Joseph. Posted in Band Practices | No Comments »

Hi all, remember that there’s a full day thai band workshop tomorrow.

Do take note:
Reporting time: 8.30 am (It’s for a reason)
Dismissal time: Estimated 5pm
Stuff to bring: Band related stuff (For SLs, remember your Flight to the Future scores), yourself, and not to forget, your hospitality.

We are hosting a foreign band tomorrow, so please act accordingly, be courteous, show them that not only thai bands are courteous, neat, organised, etc. – We can do the same too.

Tomorrow’s a rare chance to watch how a “zai” band performs/practice. Take this opportunity to improve. Please do take down notes (if needed), and have an open mind. What they may do may be different from our traditions, but please adapt to it. Also, be alert tomorrow – instructions may be given at the 11th hour. Do try your best  to follow them. :)

Thanks.
