The flute is a woodwind instrument that serves as the soprano voice in the band. Most flutes are made of metal and consist chiefly of a tube with a mouthpiece near one end. It is held sideways and the player blows across the hole to produce sound. The flute uses the treble clef and the sound is very shrill in the top-most octave. The range of the flute is over 3 octaves. It is usually used to play the melody.
The piccolo is a smaller version of the flute, usually made of wood. The piccolo is played exaactly the same way as the flute, except that it is one octave higher.
