The trumpet is the highest-pitched brass instrument. It is a played in both bands and orchestras. It produces sound by means of valves. Most modern bands use trumpets that are pitched in the key of B-flat and have a tube of four and a half feet. This tube makes up the majority of the instrument. The trumpet usually plays the melody as well, but it cannot play running notes as easily as the woodwinds.
